Contributing Factors for Tennis Elbow

by Courtney Gittins

bigstock-Serving-A-Ball--87174947.jpgContributing factors include:

  • Repeatative tugging or swinging motion of the wrist or elbow
  • Playing racket sports
  • Weightlifting
  • Carpentry, Painting
  • Typing
  •  Age

Treatment:

The most common treatment for tennis elbow is over the counter (OTC) pain relievers followed by icing and resting the affected area. Elbow braces worn during daytime activities may also be beneficial. Physical therapy can also help improve flexibility and strength in the forearm and elbow. Eccentric contraction (muscle activation that increases tension on a muscle as it lengthens) exercises have recorded the best outcomes with patients suffering from tennis elbow. These exercises work on resistance, velocity, and frequency of contractions in order to get strength and flexibility back while simultaneously getting rid of the pain. Static stretching has also been proven to help patients regain their full flexibility.
